TC Activities 2024 CJK+ASEAN Young Ambassador Program Kicked Off in Nanning, China

Nanning, China – On February 27th, 2024, the CJK+ASEAN Young Ambassadors Program (YAP2024) kicked off in Nanning, the capital city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China. Hosted by the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS), the YAP2024 is organized by Guangxi University of China and sponsored by China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Guangxi Committee. The Ministries of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea rendered valuable supports. Marked one of the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat’s flagship youth exchange programs since 2013, the YAP2024 for the first time expanded its scope from Northeast Asia to East Asia, with an attendance of 50 undergraduates and postgraduates from China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and the ASEAN countries.
H.E. SUN Weidong, Vice Foreign Minister of China, delivered video remarks at the opening ceremony. Congratulating on the opening of the YAP2024 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the commencement of the Trilateral Cooperation following the 10th Trilateral Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in last November, he reviewed the steady achievements of the Trilateral Cooperation since 1999, adding that a highly institutionalized Trilateral Cooperation brings benefits to the people of the three countries and beyond. He encouraged the younger generations to learn from each other, bridge the friendly cooperation between countries, and contribute to the peace and prosperity of the region and beyond.
In his opening remarks, TCS Secretary-General LEE Hee-sup stressed out the significance of the Trilateral Cooperation which is not only important to the three neighboring countries, but also benefits the region and beyond. He reiterated TCS’ commitments to further promote regional cooperation under the vision of “Trilateral+X” as well as the existing frameworks, including the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and ASEAN Plus Three cooperation. Sharing that a friendly and future-oriented trilateral relationship lies in the younger generations, he urged the students to embrace diversities and cultivate a spirit of dialogue and mutual understandings that transcends borders and generations.
Mr. WANG Naixue, Vice Chairman of the Political Consultative Conference of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Secretary of Party Committee of Guangxi University, extended warm welcomes to the YAP2024 participants. Highlighting that civilizations are enriched by exchanges and mutual learning, he gave expectations on the younger generations to forge a platform of close cooperation between nations, contribute their due parts to the construction of a community with a shared future, and further promote the world peace, development and harmony.
In her congratulatory remarks, Ms. YANG Yanyan, Chairperson of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Guangxi Committee and Secretary General of China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit Secretariat, shared that, “youth breeds infinite hope and creates a better future,” the development of future-oriented regional cooperation and the promotion of lasting peace and prosperity in East Asia rely heavily on the participation and contribution of the youth. She encouraged the young people to become the new driver in 10+3 cooperation, so as to contribute their wisdom and solutions to the development of East Asia.
Speaking highly of the YAP2024 in opening opportunities for the youth of the 10+3 countries to get closer to each other, Mr. Vongpano SIPASEUTH, Consul General of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in Nanning, encouraged the young participants to enrich their mutual understandings through culture and view exchanges. He further shared that the Lao PDR, as the 2024 chair country of ASEAN, stands ready to work together with China, Japan and the Republic of Korea to build a stronger and more connected region.
A dialogue with ambassadors was held following the YAP2024 opening ceremony, during which Secretary General SHI Zhongjun of the ASEAN-China Center, Secretary General HIRABAYASHI Kunihiko, and former Ambassador of the ROK to Turkmenistan CHUNG Tae-in had dynamic interactions with the young audience, giving blessings to the younger generations on a more amicable and promising future of the region by embracing the spirit of innovation, collaboration and mutual learning.
The YAP2024 is a short-term students exchange program held from February 26 to March 6, 2024. A series of events, including 6 lectures by eminent professionals such as Professor ZHANG Yunling of China Academy of Social Sciences, Director LI Kouqing of ASEAM+3 Macroeconomic Research Office and Program Director ICHIHARA Jun of Bangkok Research Center of Institute for Global Environmental Strategies, 2 career talks led by young experts from various institutes and international organizations, 1 TED-like youth talks by the participants, and visits to the regional foreign affairs office and diplomatic corps, will be held during the 10-day program. The participants will also have chances to experience local cultures.
